If your child attends any public school (charter and "traditional schools" are also public), please pay attention to this post! On Tuesday, September 8th Obama plans to speak to our children via public schools. I was O.K. with this at first. I mean, even though I did not vote for the man, it is good to educate our children about government and leaders.
However, please click here http://www.ed.gov/index.jhtml and then click on the "activities" for the teachers to do with students after the video. I disagree with someone using the public school system to teach my children how or what to learn from any government leader. I am against Obama telling my children to "listen to him", and to make sure to "know what he wants them to do". I believe that these lessons teach students what to think instead of thinking for themselves. A speech from the president, along with lesson plans afterwards has never been done in American History. SCARY STUFF especially if you don't agree with what the government "wants them to learn"!! Sorry, but that is the job of parents.
I have never posted anything political on this blog. However, I believe that this is a moral issue and we need to protect our kids. Please educate yourselves as to what your kids are being told and taught. Please don't think that just because your kids are at a charter or "traditional" school they will not see this. Email your principals and teachers. From my understanding, Higley schools will give parents the opportunity to "opt. out" of the speech. The Coates family will be "opting out".
Here is a really great article about this.

I was just informed of this even this morning and I have decided to allow the kids to view the talk, but they will not be allowed to complete any assingments regarding it. Still trying to take it all in.
Good luck next week.
That is a really good idea.
Wow. I wonder if that is nation wide. Scary. He is just plain scary.
I will allow my children to watch...we have talked to them about respecting the office if POTUS, even if we didn't vote for him. This can't be lost when the other side wins...because what happens when we win one???
I think they are okay to hear him out. It will be a topic of discussion at the dinner table that night...but I can't justify opting them out...when I lobby for things like keeping God in our schools, knowing there are many non believers in our midst. I see it as a little give and take.
The world is a crazy place...but we can't protect them forever..we have to prepare them..and unfortunatly we are having to do this very early!!!!
but I am a crazy Canadian....wink!
not saying you aren't respecting him...just blabbing! :)
I LOVE crazy Canadians! The speech isn't what I have a problem with, it's the "activities" afterwards. Read them. It sounds like we're becoming Cuba for Heaven's sakes. I'm all about being openminded and exposing children to all political sides. I have voted Republican, Democrat (I will never admit for whom), and Independant. I just can't stand government forcing itself upon our children the way those "activities" do. I love Jenn's idea of having her kids hear the speech, but not doing the government produced assignments afterwards.
